If you're using Skype or Google Voice, now is a good time to switch to SIP. Keep those assholes from snooping on you.

Microsoft's defense of its very close relationship with national intelligence agencies has historically been that it "complies with applicable laws." However, its "compliance" in the past seemed to have exceeded the compliance of other companies, as it offered the NSA pre-encryption access to most of its popular services as well as "working closely" with the agency to allow it to grab both audio and video from Skype, which it acquired in 2011.

maybe its time i learned more about setting up asterisk - but how would i convince all those relatives to switch to sip?

Therefore, don't quit using proprietary services, or you'll make the NSA's job easier :)

@michaelmd Don't try to oversell sip to the relatives, and ensure they have a plan b. About a year ago I helped my mother replace her landline with sip, and I would consider it a success despite the setbacks.

Don't expect your relatives to have to do anything, you set it up for them, and make sure it's as easy to use as the previous phone service, that is they pick up the phone and dial the number.

I pay for my mother's internet connection, as well as phone calls to avoid confusing her. Given the sip calls and landline calls (excluding mobile calls) are pretty much free, that's no big deal.

@[email protected] The problem with SIP is that it doesn't work well with NAT (an ugly workaround technology that should never have been invented) and can easily be blocked by admins while the proprietary solutions just take over the PC and your Internet connection, use it as a proxy for others, circumvent the firewall by misusing HTTP and other techniques. So users who just want a "working system" use Skype because everything else doesn't work in their crappy restricted LAN. :+
