I switched from Gnome a few months ago because it felt too heavy for my netbook. I tried Razor-qt but they had stopped development as they started their merger with LXDE-qt to create LXQt. I'm currently using E17, which is nice, and I like the super integrated programs built on the EFL, but it isn't fully in Debian and I'm not ready to compile it all right now. If I knew what I was doing I might try to package the rest for Debian, but it's not something I can do atm.
Luminescence looks nice, but it's BSD only. Right now for Enlightenment I've kept the grey background, I have conky on the right side, and I have a bar on the bottom with the time, applets and programs open. For what I'm using, Enlightenment even seems overkill. Awesome? {Open,Flux}box? Submit the rest of e17 to Debian?

Awesome is amazing, if you like tiling WM. http://awesome.naquadah.org/
