The #MaleFeministImpression hashtag on Twitter has certainly given me pause for thought. As I hope it does for my male or mostly male followers too.

I actually typed out a comment that addressed a bunch of this, but in attempt to address a single-word typo, I accidentally deleted it. So let me summarize:

  • I agree it can be self-defeating, and in fact, there's a serious risk of conversations turning into this comic, which isn't helpful either, both because ironic, and if you attack men for identifying as feminists, then they probably will stop doing that. That would indeed be self-defeating (and not to mention, it does become ironic, see the comic)
  • That said, identifying as a feminist is by no means a free pass to continue as things were otherwise. You have to listen, and enable others to do things.

I'm pretty sure we agree there.

Also, I post this stuff as self-criticism... I would like to know how I could do better. I'm sure I don't manage to do the right thing a lot... please let me know, and help me out.

This comment thread is so hilariously not self-aware, I can't even.  :)

Maiki: the idea is that if any of the tweets with the hashtag feel like they describe you or others you know, it may be a good time to pause and think about what that means about *you* or your friends.  If the overall concept is frustrating and makes you upset, then you have more introspection to do.  If you find the tweets hilarious, and you don't feel the urge to say "I'm not like that!!!", then congratulations on your promotion to the status of "non-problematic ally"!

Oh, okay. That is some context that makes sense to me. By the time I saw the feed, I am pretty sure it was just trolls flooding it, because there was some vicious people making violent threats to women. That was obviously not what it had started as, but the term MaleFeministImpression doesn't imply anything to me by itself.

I can see how that would describe what Chris was talking about, too, though I wasn't able to deduce it from eir description. Thanks for clarifying! ^_^
