Linux Sysadmin, reluctant web app developer, smoker of cigars. I have a StatusNet instance and want to know what this pump.io is about.

Built out my first Ruby on Rails app to a mostly usable state today. 2 months to learn Ruby and Rails, but probably only 4 or 5 hours to get a database-backed app up on a server to where someone can start entering and updating data. I think I like it.

Finally figured out all the pitfalls of getting Ruby on Rails to install and work. Installing rails is by far the hardest part of learning it. It assumes you can install to a home directory using 'sudo', which is annoying. Works OK on a Mac or Ubuntu (if you have admin privileges), but I'm trying to do it on Linux. On my work Mac I have to do my rails stuff as an admin user. Which is wrong.

Still, Rails is starting to make sense. I like the Ruby language. It seems to do away with unnecessary syntactic clutter and make easy things easy. It reminds me of Perl in that respect.

I imagine any MVC framework would impress me similarly to the way rails does. It's just a better way to build things. I plan on learning enough CodeIgniter to do a basic project next.

Hardly anyone is at work on Mondays, so I Get Stuff Done (tm). We have a creaky old SVN/Trac server that I'm building a replacement for. I built the VM a year ago, I just need to get the other stuff running and the repos and databases transferred.

I'm not a genius on setting up SVN  and Trac installation is poorly documented. I'll get it worked out, though.

I'm sorry if I'm mostly negative in my comments on pump.io. I started this account to evaluate the pump and see if it's right for me. I'm perfectly happy with StatusNet as my social networking platform, but Evan believes pump.io is the future so it's unwise not to take it seriously.

I realize I don't understand the technical reasons pump.io is a better platform. A marketing department that keeps telling people why this is better so they ignore the rough edges til they get fixed would be helpful. But we don't do marketing all that well.

IMO it is important to point out the negatives in order to spur improvements

    jrobb at 2013-06-01T03:11:34Z

True. But I hate to criticize if I can't help fix it. And right now I just don't have the time.

I really like the central idea behind pump - which is a very elegant and light-weight social networking engine. Then you build everything else around that. It's the "everything else" part that is still not finished :-)

The fact that pump.io doesn't have a "replies" tab seems to be a problem. But maybe that's a UI thing. I suppose a client could do whatever it wants. When there are clients.

It's a different paradigm. Replies are the comments associated with the note.

    Andy C at 2013-06-01T08:16:26Z

Yeah, but I think the reason a lot of people miss the "replies" tab from SN is because the notification system is broken and it's virtually impossible to keep track of the discussions.

Home smoking a cigar. Trying to learn Ruby well enough that I can learn Rails. There is no very good reason for this.

There is too a good reason. Up until a year or so ago, anyone who touched RoR was looked upon as a magician. Then came Node and everyone seems to have forgotten that RoR exists.

    [email protected] at 2013-05-27T01:52:21Z

Actually Ruby on Rails is one of the frameworks we're considering porting an app to at work. The others are CodeIgniter and Drupal. Node is not a serious consideration.

    Jeff Ratliff at 2013-05-27T01:56:15Z

cool! ruby was a consideration for me, but recently we started using python at work to try out a few things.

also, I cannot see @lnxwalt's posts any longer, just like I can't see @evan's

I'm noticing that anyone can follow anyone with pump.io and thers's no block mechanism. That could be a problem for some people. I should probably find where these things are reported and see if it's on the list.

Also, no password reset mechanism. It's cool that the account isn't tied to an email address, but loosing an account due to a forgotten password is a pretty big discouragement.

    Hope your strawberries grow well.
I tried to post that comment on someone else's profile. I guess that doesn't work.

Open Farm Game keeps taunting me. I have failed. My plots are empty and I have no coins left.  Oh how I wish there was a "Start Over" button.

    My plots are forever alone.
If I could pass on some of my mostly unused coins, I certainly would. ;)

I gave up on OFG when my crop died while I was at work. Reminded me of what happened with the handheld "virtual pets" kids were getting 15-20 years ago.

I created another account so I could still play. May not be the smartest thing I've ever done.

I am failing at Open Farm Game. Ran out of  money and can't water stuff. Maybe my strawberries will live?

I didn't know that my posts weren't public til now. I suppose I'll change that in the future. I read that it's a known bug, though. One day maybe we can set a default.

[email protected] , jrobb like this.

I always set mine to public, at least for right now anyway. That may change when things start to fill up around here.

    lostson at 2013-05-17T14:49:37Z

There's been much talk on the default To/CC values. There will be an option to set this eventually. ;)
